The Real Benefits of Exercise: More Than Just Toning Your Body

Since COVID-19, it seems as though there's been a massive surge of gym-goers and the physically conscious. It’s always a competition - from who can lift the heaviest to who can wake up the earliest to be the first one at the gym.

But let’s be real.. who doesn’t want a super toned body and a six pack? Other than the obvious benefit of having a toned physique, what are the other benefits of being fit and staying active? According to the NIH, “Exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood by improving self-esteem and cognitive function.” It’s no doubt that after a good workout, you feel unstoppable and on top of the world, but why’s that? Studies have proven that exercise increases anandamide, a neurotransmitter that produces feelings of euphoria. Exercise also has other positive effects such as improved memory and improved sleep quality. According to Harvard Health, exercise increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which helps form new synapses that improve memory and learning. According to the CDC, “regular physical activity can lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels,” overall reducing risk for cardiovascular diseases.

Some of my favorite ways of staying active include hiking, cycling, and yoga! You can take a walk around your neighborhood or explore local hiking trails. Most gyms also offer cycling and yoga classes, so I’d consider looking into different facilities that offer classes that intrigue you the most.

Ultimately, staying active isn’t just about the body you build, but the mental and physical benefits that will keep you feeling your best, inside and out.
